| Dons Look for a Good Friday |
Wonderful ... Superb ... Fantastic ... Sensational ... the superlatives could go on and for those who predicted it, some level of satisfaction and closure. A comfortable win over the team who were top of the league at the time and thankfully something for the Dons faithful to cheer at last.
The next task is 'on paper' the hardest in the league, a trip to Championship One favourites Hunslet Hawks, but last Sundays victory proved that games are won on the pitch and not 'on paper' and the Dons supporters will travel to South Leeds with renewed hope.
Hunslet player-coached by former Huddersfield Giants and Wakefield Wildcats Super League star Paul March have assembled a strong squad for 2010 (which includes brother David) and come into this fixture having lost only two competitive games this season, one against Featherstone Rovers in qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Northern Rail Cup with three wins from four fixtures and one in the league against unbeaten Oldham.
Among the Hawks Northern Rail Cup victims were Championship side Halifax who themselves would have qualified for the quarter finals had they not been beaten 42-36 at the South Leeds Stadium.
The Dons will be buoyed by last weeks result against York City Knights but the Hawks also had a convincing victory, beating Rochdale Hornets 44-8.
There has been some eye-catching recruitment at Hunslet, including no less than five players from last seasons Featherstone Rovers first team squad. Steve Dooler spent over 10 years at Post Office Road but has been installed as the Hawks Club Captain for the 2010 Season. He is joined by fellow forward James Houston, full back Stuart Kain, winger Waine Pryce and utility Tom Haughey.
Also on board are Papua New Guinea internationals Michael Mark (three quarter), Nicko Slain (prop forward) and Charlie Wabo (second row forward).
Familiar faces for Dons supporters to look out for include Scottish International forward Neil Lowe, Jason Hart who was a member of the 2008 squad which gained promotion, plus a couple of fringe players from the St. John Ellis era, stand off Danny Grimshaw and prop forward Scott Woodcock.
Assuming Liam Brown is passed fit after picking up a minor injury in the York victory, the Dons may well go with the same seventeen and to be fair who would deny any one of them a place after last weeks performance.
