Swinton V Dons 2nd meeting of the season
Match Previews Swinton Lions v Dons 21/03/2010 - Co-operative Championship One - Match Preview.

On that occasion, the Dons were unlucky 30-20 losers having led 20-12 at half time, with two tries in the last ten minutes (the latter from Graham Holroyd in the final minute) turning the tie in the home teams favour.

Since then the Lions have had mixed fortunes losing two Northern Rail Cup games to Batley Bulldogs and Widnes Vikings but winning one against Workington Town. A victory over amateurs Warrington Wizards secured a place in the fourth round of the Carnegie Challenge Cup and a home fixture against Halifax. In Championship One, it's lost one won one. Last weeks away victory at London Scholars following a first round home defeat to local rivals Oldham.

The Swinton squad features a number of players familiar to Dons supporters, the most high-profile being former Leeds half-back Graham Holroyd who was the recipient of a five-year contract from John Wright. Also recognisable should be former Warrington Wolves and Widnes Vikings full back or half back Gary Hulse who spent a month on loan with the Dons during the Belle Vue era and another former loanee Sam Reay who was at the Keepmoat Stadium from Wigan Warriors in 2008.

With former coach Paul Kidd now in the role of Director of Coaching, the Lions have recruited former Huddersfield Giants and Halifax forward Paul Smith as player coach and signed a number of players with experience at higher than Championship One level. Forward Dana Wilson followed Smith from Halifax and the much travelled Phil Joseph, sent off in the Northern Rail Cup tie in February, joined from Oldham.

Former Bradford Bulls full back Richie Hawkyard is now operating at half back and Ian Watson signed from Leigh Centurions adds competition for the creative roles. Perhaps the most high-profile signing during the close-season was that of former Widnes Vikings full back or winger Gavin Dodd who has also been handed the goal kicking duties so should be a regular on the scoresheet.

The Dons injury problems continue with Scott Johnson the latest casualty, although Danny Stanley may be set to make a return.
